Today Show - Matt Lauer interviews Jean Newell

Sixty-one-year-old Jean Newell is the type of woman NBC’s Matt Lauer refers to as a “Fearless Boomer.” The small business owner from Florida recently sat down with Lauer on The Today Show to share her story of going from a pink slip to a red hot business. Newell, a self-proclaimed “Boomerpreneur”, appeared with Lauer during a Fearless Boomers Starting over segment. She told Lauer she spent 35 years as a real estate agent before the dwindling housing market forced her to look at other career options. She said the idea of starting her own business was “very scary” but she did it out of necessity. “I was a little nervous about trying to find something suitable at my age so I just decided to start my own business,” Newell says. She developed something called the PUP—a unisex wearable organizer. Newell told Lauer her designer bag caught the attention of the nation’s largest shopping home network—QVC—where she was invited to appear and sell them more than 35 times. According to statistics from the Today Show, Newell is among eight million baby boomers who are currently self-employed. As a result of her start-up success, Newell says she has started a campaign to help educate boomers and seniors on what it takes to get started in your own home-based business. Lauer called Newell a success story! About Jean Newell Jean Newell is a Boomerpreneur and owner of Newco Enterprises, LLC, a Marketing and Manufacturing company. She has invented several products and successfully marketed them to QVC. Her product is also featured in the Florida Dillards Department Stores. She is also a popular speaker presenting seminars on “How to Take a Product to Market” and “Marketing Yourself on a Limited Budget.” Jean would love to schedule an interview with you to talk about how to recession proof your bank account. Florida Woman Bounces from Pink Slip to National Spotlight

Jean Newell is taking her message of how to market yourself into a new career to The Today Show. The 61-year-old self-proclaimed “Boomerpreneur” will offer advice on how to bounce back from the pink slip and reinvent yourself for a new career. Newell has first-hand experience on how to do this. After 35 years as a real estate agent, the dwindling housing market forced her to look at other career options. “I was a little nervous about trying to find something suitable at my age so I just decided to start my own business,” Newell says. She developed something called the PUP—a unisex wearable organizer. Newell’s designer bag caught the attention of the nation’s largest shopping home network—QVC—where she was invited to appear and sell them.

Newell says starting your own home-based business has tremendous advantages. The weakened economy coupled with corporate downsizing and diminishing investments is forcing many baby boomers, like Newell, to look for alternative sources of income. “After a 35-year-career in real estate, I realized the only way I would be able to offset rising inflation and the declining real estate market was to take control of my own income destiny. That’s why I decided to go into business for myself to develop and market my own invention,” says Newell. She attributes her success to aggressive marketing and sheer determination.

The 61-year-old has started a campaign to help educate boomers and seniors on what it takes to get started in your own home-based business and she will share her expertise with viewers of The Today Show on February 17 during a special baby boomer segment.

Dilliard's to carry Boomerpreneur's invention

Dillard’s Department Store has announced plans to carry a new type of travel bag called the “giZmo”. The wearable fashion organizer is the creation of retired Realtor Jean Newell of Melbourne. Newell says her designer bags have a number of compartments to hold a variety of small items and should come in handy for men and women ---especially those who are traveling by plane. “Instead of having to store your personal and valuable items in a carry-on bag or have them checked at the airport, you can keep them close to you in your giZmo,” according to Newell. Another product created by Newell, known as The PUP (Personal Utility Pouch) was featured on the QVC Shopping Network and became one of their most popular items. Newell is one of a growing number of baby boomers who left Corporate America to start their own businesses and become Boomerpreneurs. For the past ten years adults ages 55 to 64 have been the group most likely to start a new business, according to a study released by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which promotes entrepreneurship. Newell will be visiting Dillard’s corporate headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas the week of August 25 to tour their facilities and attend their vendor orientation school. Newell’s giZmo bags will go on sale in the Florida Dillard’s Department Stores in the coming months. Florida Woman’s PUP Invention is “Top Dog” on National Talk Show

When The Montel Williams Show hits the airwaves on Monday, June 16, he will introduce a product called the “PUP” to his studio audience and the rest of America.

The PUP, which stands for Personal Utility Pouch, is the brainchild of Melbourne resident, Jean Newell. The former real estate agent says the multi-purpose, unisex bag was developed to help keep her from misplacing things. “I was tired of calling my own misplaced cell phone to find its whereabouts!” The easy-to-carry-bag is designed to hold personal and professional items in an organized accessory. Newell says, “It has become a big hit in my circle of fellow baby boomers.”
Williams, who will be giving the bags away to his audience, called them “a really great thing.” The PUPs were also included in 300 celebrity gift bags during the talk show host’s recent MS Foundation Fundraiser/Poker Event in New York. Newell says she had the opportunity to offer the bags to the Show’s Producer while attending one of his tapings.
Another opportunity for the newest Boomerpreneur came when she was invited by QVC, to pitch her product there. As a result of booming sales, she made more than 35 appearances on the nation’s leading shopping network.

The 61-year-old credits her success to hard work and years of experience. “It’s a blessing to have lived long enough, to go through trial and error and to still have the desire and drive to be successful. It seems as if I’ve gone from being considered an “ol’ bag” to a bag lady---and a successful one at that!”
