Today Show - Matt Lauer interviews Jean Newell
Sixty-one-year-old Jean Newell is the type of woman NBC’s Matt Lauer refers to as a “Fearless Boomer.” The small business owner from Florida recently sat down with Lauer on The Today Show to share her story of going from a pink slip to a red hot business.
Newell, a self-proclaimed “Boomerpreneur”, appeared with Lauer during a Fearless Boomers Starting over segment. She told Lauer she spent 35 years as a real estate agent before the dwindling housing market forced her to look at other career options. She said the idea of starting her own business was “very scary” but she did it out of necessity. “I was a little nervous about trying to find something suitable at my age so I just decided to start my own business,” Newell says. She developed something called the PUP—a unisex wearable organizer. Newell told Lauer her designer bag caught the attention of the nation’s largest shopping home network—QVC—where she was invited to appear and sell them more than 35 times.
According to statistics from the Today Show, Newell is among eight million baby boomers who are currently self-employed. As a result of her start-up success, Newell says she has started a campaign to help educate boomers and seniors on what it takes to get started in your own home-based business.
Lauer called Newell a success story!
